Heavy-Duty Degreasing for Shipboard Cleaning Operations
A Water-Based Approach to Marine Degreasing
Engine rooms, bilges, tanks and decks can accumulate heavy fuel oil, lubricating oil, carbonised grease, salt and dust. These deposits can be difficult to remove and may require a planned cleaning procedure involving suitable application, contact time, agitation and rinsing.
ACE Marine Degrease is designed for marine cleaning applications where oil and sludge contamination needs to be loosened for subsequent washing and collection. Its concentrated formulation offers different dilution options for heavy deposits and routine degreasing tasks.
Select the correct concentration and cleaning method according to the contamination, surface compatibility and approved vessel procedures.
Designed Around Marine Cleaning Requirements
Support routine maintenance with a cleaning approach that considers oil contamination, surface compatibility, cleaning conditions and onboard safety requirements.
Water-Based & Non-Flammable
A solvent-free formulation specified as non-flammable, offering an alternative to solvent-based cleaners for suitable applications.
Heavy Oil & Sludge Cleaning
Helps loosen heavy fuel oil, lubricating oil, grease and carbonised deposits to support subsequent washing and removal operations.
Low-Odour Cleaning
The low-odour formulation is designed to reduce strong solvent smells during suitable cleaning operations. Ventilation and PPE remain essential.
Concentrated for Dilution
Different dilution ratios are provided for sludge tanks, carbonised deposits, bilges, engine rooms and general degreasing tasks.
Where ACE Marine Degrease Can Be Used
Explore the main shipboard cleaning areas covered by the supplied product information. Confirm material compatibility and the approved cleaning method before application.
Engine Room & Machinery
For heavy fuel oil, lubricating oil, carbonised grease and dust on engine exteriors, diesel generator sets, gearboxes, pumps, compressors and floor plates. Use suitable hot- or cold-water cleaning methods as approved.
Bilges, Oily Water Areas & Tanks
For oily residues, emulsified oil and sludge in bilge wells, separators, drains, strainers, fuel-oil tanks, sludge tanks and sump pits. Collect wash water and residues through the vessel's approved waste-handling process.
Deck Machinery & Cargo Holds
For marine grease, hydraulic oil, salt deposits and residual cargo oil on compatible winches, windlasses, cranes and hold surfaces. Brushing, spraying and pressure washing may be considered where appropriate.
Fuel Handling & Bunkering Areas
For sticky heavy fuel oil and diesel residues around manifolds, transfer pumps, flanges and valves. Follow the vessel's isolation, spill-control and bunkering safety procedures before cleaning.
Workshop, Accommodation & Galley
Diluted cleaning solution for suitable light oil, tool grease, exhaust hoods, ducts and compatible hard surfaces. Keep the product away from food and food-contact areas.
Hull Machinery & Dry-Docking
For assessment in cleaning tasks involving soot, exhaust deposits, heavy grease and oil contamination on compatible machinery and surfaces during maintenance or dry-docking.
A Structured 7-Step Cleaning Procedure
The following sequence follows the supplied marine sludge procedure. The vessel's responsible personnel must review and approve the task-specific method, equipment and safety controls before work begins.
Prepare the Area
Obtain permits, ventilate as required, stop relevant pumps, isolate valves and remove loose debris.
Apply the Solution
The supplied procedure specifies a 1:3 solution for tank walls, bottoms, brackets and coils, subject to the approved cleaning plan.
Allow Contact Time
Allow 20–45 minutes as stated in the supplied procedure. Any circulation or agitation must follow the approved method and risk assessment.
Agitate Deposits
Use brushing, mechanical mixing or an approved air-agitation method where permitted by the vessel's procedures.
High-Pressure Wash
The supplied procedure references a 150–250 bar jet. Use approved equipment, trained operators and suitable protective controls.
Collect & Pump Out
Collect loosened sludge and wash water in the designated containment system and transfer it to the approved waste tank.
Rinse & Inspect
Rinse with fresh water where appropriate, inspect the surfaces and repeat on remaining deposits if necessary.
Recommended Dilution Ratios
Select the dilution according to the type and severity of contamination. All ratios below are product-to-water, as specified in the supplied product information.
| Application | Product : Water | Cleaning Objective |
|---|---|---|
| Sludge Tanks (HFO / MDO) | 1:3 – 1:5 | Heavy oil and sludge contamination. |
| Carbonised Deposits | 1:1 – 1:3 | Stubborn, aged or carbonised deposits. |
| Bilge / Engine Room | 1:5 – 1:10 | Oil, grease and general machinery contamination. |
| General Degreasing | 1:10 – 1:20 | Routine cleaning of compatible surfaces. |
| Hot-Water Cleaning | 1:5 | Use for the intended hot-water cleaning task as directed. |
| Light Cleaning / Accommodation | 1:20 – 1:40 | Light soil on suitable hard surfaces. |
Mix slowly with water to limit foaming. Hot water, foamers, spray guns, brushing and high-pressure jetting may be used where suitable for the application. Confirm the recommended dilution and method against the current product instructions.

ACE Marine Degrease vs. Solvent Cleaners
Compare key formulation and operating considerations when selecting a cleaning product for a suitable marine application.
| Parameter | ACE Marine Degrease | Solvent Cleaner |
|---|---|---|
| Formulation | Water-based and solvent-free | Solvent-based formulation |
| Flammability | Specified as non-flammable | Depends on the solvent and product flash point |
| Odour | Low odour | Depends on formulation and ventilation |
| Usage | Concentrate diluted according to the application | Depends on product instructions |
| Sludge Removal | Designed to loosen oil and sludge for washing and collection | Performance depends on the solvent and contamination |
| Waste Handling | Oily wash water and sludge require proper collection and handling | Spent solvent and contaminated materials require suitable handling |
| Cost Considerations | Dilution may reduce concentrate consumption per cleaning task | Depends on purchase, usage, handling and disposal costs |
Actual cleaning performance and operating costs depend on contamination, dilution, cleaning method, labour, waste handling and the alternative product selected.
Safety, Storage & Environmental Responsibility
Correct handling, surface checks and waste management are essential parts of every marine cleaning operation.
Personal Protective Equipment
Wear suitable chemical-resistant gloves and goggles. Select any additional respiratory protection and protective clothing according to the product SDS and task risk assessment.
Tank Entry & Ventilation
Follow tank-entry procedures, permit-to-work requirements, atmosphere testing, isolation, ventilation and rescue arrangements. Never enter without required authorisation.
Protect Ship Surfaces
Spot-test painted coatings and sensitive materials. Confirm compatibility with metals, rubber, seals, gaskets and plastic components before wider use.
Correct Storage
Store below 50°C, away from direct sunlight, and keep the container sealed. Refer to the current label and safety data sheet for full handling instructions.
Marine Waste & Discharge Requirements
Keep the product away from acids and food areas, and do not mix it with other chemicals unless compatibility is confirmed. Collect and manage oily wash water and sludge in accordance with the vessel's approved procedures, applicable MARPOL requirements and port rules. Biodegradability alone does not mean that a product or contaminated wash water is suitable for discharge into the sea or drains. Always consult the current Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and product documentation.
